Peers talk Cena: Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect
Posted on Aug 26 2008 by admin I Comments (0)
PITTSBURGH – At the Mellon Arena around 5:30 Tuesday evening, John Cena’s WWE colleagues reacted favorably to the news of his successful surgery, performed earlier in the day by renowned neurosurgeon Joseph Maroon, to repair his herniated disk.

“I have all the respect in the world for John Cena. I’ve known him for a long time. He has great determination and he’s incredibly focused,” explained Big Show. “John has overcome many hurdles and has blown through any barrier in his way. He has changed our industry in many positive ways. I think this surgery, if anything, would help get John the rest he needs. The guy is constantly going all the time .… He’s a freak of nature.”

The World’s Largest Athlete added, “Right now, it’s good for a lot of guys who are in title contention, because John Cena is not involved. However, John Cena will be back, and they will have to deal with him when he returns.”

WWE Hall of Fame commentator Jim Ross, having announced many of John Cena’s most electrifying matches on Raw, also witnessed the three-time WWE Champion make a speedy return this past January at the Royal Rumble.

“I’m happy to hear that the surgery was as successful as it was" Ross said. "It wouldn’t surprise me if before long, after getting out of a hospital bed, that John Cena is going to be training.”

The SmackDown play-by-play announcer continued, “Cena’s work ethic and toughness don’t really surprise me. I’m just really happy that this [surgery] worked out well for him.”

Although WWE Champion Triple H has had several memorable bouts with the Chain Gang Commander, he has always seen John Cena as a friend and respected him as a fierce competitor.

“John Cena has proved in the past, with his pectoral injury, just how tough he is. He’s a mutant … an alien,” said The Game. “Two hours after having surgery on his disk, he’s at the arena with a band-aid on his neck saying ‘Hello’ to everybody.

"Part of Cena’s strength is not only his physical power," the WWE Champion added. "It’s his mental toughness and his passion. Two hours after surgery, he wants to be at the arena saying ‘Hello’ to everybody in the WWE locker room. ... God help us all when he returns."

John Cena: Post-Surgery Interview
Posted on Aug 26 2008 by admin I Comments (0)
PITTSBURGH – On Tuesday, around 5 p.m. ET, John Cena appeared in the locker room area of the Mellon Arena with a huge smile on his face. The three-time WWE Champion was shaking hands not only with Dr. Joseph Maroon, who performed his successful operation earlier today, but also with WWE Superstars and Divas, who were marveling at Cena’s appearance just hours after his serious surgery.

“I feel great. Dr. Maroon is fantastic. He explained every possible procedure he could and could not perform, and the potential risks of all of them,” Cena said. “I explained to Dr. Maroon not only my immediate goals, but also my long-term goals. He took them all into consideration and recommended the most commonplace procedure with the least amount of side effects.”

Cena has been able to keep his sense of humor in tack throughout the ordeal, quipping that “the fusion surgery was so successful, because we used a Gillette Fusion razor.”

Afterwards, John Cena left the arena to head to his hotel for some well-deserved rest.

Sugery a Success!
Posted on Aug 26 2008 by admin I Comments (0)
STAMFORD, Conn. – WWE Superstar John Cena is temporarily out of action with a herniated disk in his neck.

UPDATE: WWE.com has learned that Cena's surgery was successful and that Dr. Joseph Maroon, renowned neurosurgeon, Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers, was very positive regarding Cena's condition.

“We performed a microsurgical removal of a large disk fragment compression on the spinal cord which was weakening the nerve leading to the right arm," Dr. Maroon told WWE.com shortly after the operation. "We created a small incision in the front of the neck, using an operating microscope, to remove the fragment from the spinal cord and nerve. The operation took approximately an hour and a half."

Dr. Maroon added, "I think John’s prognosis is excellent. We performed this same procedure on three all-pro NFL players, and all three resumed their football careers.”

WWE's Dr. Chris Amann, who was on site for Cena's surgery, agreed with Dr. Maroon's assessment on the Chain Gang Commander's successful procedure.

“The surgery went exactly as planned. There were no complications. What we saw in the MRI correlated with what we saw in his disk. Dr. Maroon was able to visualize the disk using a microscope. Right after Cena woke up from the surgery, he said that ‘the pain in his arm and shoulder was gone,'" Dr. Amann recalled.

"As far as what could’ve gone wrong during surgery is infection and not removing all the disk material. In Cena’s case, everything went well," Dr. Armann added. "Dr. Maroon and I expect a full recovery. In a couple of weeks, he’ll be able to start with leg cardio, and then resistance training in four to six weeks. The bone graft that was put into his neck needs to heal before he can see action.”

Cena's injury was the horrific outcome of a high impact Batista Bomb that caught an airborne Cena off the top rope at SummerSlam, resulting in numbness in his right arm and extensive pain in his shoulder.

“You can either do one of two things: be upset or know what you can do to get better,” said former WWE Champion Cena prior to the surgery. “The ultimate goal is to be as strong as I can and get back into the ring as soon as possible.”

BACKSTAGE WITH GRISHAM & BATISTA
Todd Grisham brought in Batista for an interview. Batista did not look happy. Grisham asked about the match against Kane tonight, but Batista had to comment on Cena first. He said the match against Cena was one of the toughest of his career and he's never seen Cena back down before, which is why he has nothing but respect for Cena especially facing surgery. Batista addressed Kane and said he's not intimidated by that sick freak. He said it's personal tonight. Batista then stared off to close the promo.

BATISTA VS. KANE
A big power struggle ensued to start things off while the announcers commenting on Cena's injury being part of the game in WWE. Lawler with the line that it's not ballet. That's a pretty ignorant line oft-repeated in wrestling, as ballet requires the same physical commitment and pressure on the joints and body with an amazing amount of time devoted to it. Yes, I have had conversation with a former ballet dancer who had to retire at the age of 20 due to her injuries. In any event, they cut to commercial with Batista on the defensive and Kane enjoying his attack on Batista.

They came back with Kane teasing a chokeslam before focusing his attack on the injured knee. Kane smiled and took great pleasure in going after the knee. At 10:00, Kane took Batista to the outside and slammed his knee into the ring steps to continue the attack. Batista then started his traditional comeback of working on one good body part. He then took Kane face-first into the bottom turnbuckle with a drop toe hold before landing a hard clothesline in the corner. He went for a second, but Kane blocked and wanted a chokeslam.

Breaking News: Cena suffers herniated disk
Posted on Aug 25 2008 by admin I Comments (0)
Three-time WWE Champion John Cena will be out of action indefinitely with a herniated disk in his neck. Requiring surgery, this injury is the result of several Batista Bombs delivered by The Animal at SummerSlam.

According to WWE’s Dr. Chris Amann, who reviewed the MRI results with Cena, the injury sustained by the Chain Gang Commander was considerably worse than originally thought with large disk herniation.

“It needs to be dealt with because I lost most of the feeling in my right arm and am having pain in my shoulder,” Cena told WWE.com. “I’m losing 20 percent of my strength per day. If I don’t do anything about it, the injury will end up rupturing and then the surgery will be more difficult. It’s not easy, because surgery never is.”

Last year, Cena missed considerable time when he tore his pectoral muscle after receiving an RKO by Randy Orton on an announce table. He later made a remarkable return to the ring months ahead of schedule at the Royal Rumble this past January.

“It’s a different injury than the pectoral tear because that was more of a muscle injury; this is concerning my bones, which has a lot less blood flow than muscle tissue. It also has to do with my neck, which is a very fragile area,” Cena described.

Batista to register at Rock the Vote bus on Tuesday
Posted on Aug 25 2008 by admin I Comments (0)
WWE Superstar Batista and Diva Candice Michelle will register to vote this Tuesday, Aug. 26, in Denver, at the Rock the Vote Mobile Bus powered by AT&T. Expected to arrive around 2 p.m. (Mountain time) at the bus -- which will be located across the street from the Pepsi Center, between 14th and Stout Street -- their attendance is intended to demonstrate to younger voters throughout the country how important it is to participate in the electoral process.

The two patriotic Superstars will register while attending the Democratic National Convention – along with United States Champion Shelton Benjamin – as part of WWE’s ongoing Smackdown Your Vote! initiative. Smackdown Your Vote!, tag-teaming with Rock the Vote, is working to encourage 18- to 30-year-old voters to become more active in the political system, a demographic that has turned out in significant numbers for the primaries this year.

Next week, WWE will check in on Superstars Shawn Michaels, Mr. Kennedy and Diva Mickie James as they attend the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul. To promote voter registration, footage from WWE Superstars’ activities at the conventions will be shown on Raw, ECW, and SmackDown. WWE.com will also provide continuing convention coverage, so be sure to keep checking here back often.

In addition to the Superstars’ appearances, working hand-in-hand with Cable in the Classroom, WWE will provide footage for a series of videos for K-12 schools nationwide via Cable in the Classroom’s free, online learning game, eLECTIONS: Your Adventure in Politics. eLECTIONS is a standards-based election simulation being used in classroom’s nationwide featuring content from CNN Student News, C-SPAN and History.

When: Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2 p.m. (Mountain time)

Where: AT&T/Rock the Vote bus across the street from the Pepsi Center (14th St. and Stout St.)

BATISTA VS. PAUL BURCHILL
Lawler said Katie Lea is not present because she's in the next match. Burchill went right after the injured knee and tried to wear down Batista, but Batista nailed a spear and spinebuster combo. Batista then measured Burchill and scored the Batistabomb for the easy pin and the win. Batista then smiled all the way up the entance ramp to celebrate the easy win.
WINNER: BATISTA

CENA & BATISTA BACKSTAGE SEGMENT
Mike Adamle introduced himself and started to introduce the newest member of the Raw roster, Primo Colon (brother of Carlito), but Adamle suddenly spotted John Cena walking around. He ran up to Cena to inform him of some sort of match scheduled for tonight, but Cena brushed him off to handle some business. He walked up to Batista, who stopped for a brief stare down. Cena complimented him on the match last night, then shook his hand and said the best man won. Batista smiled while catching his breath, then Cena said that was only last night. He walked away.

JOHN CENA VS. CODY RHODES & TED DIBIASE
They returned with the action in progress. DiBiase was the aggressor here, using a little cat-and-mouse from Cody to bait Cena into an attack. DiBiase smashed Cena with successive right hands before the tag champs started a methodical in-and-out attack on Cena.

SummerSlam Results - Batista's Blockbuster Triumph
Posted on Aug 17 2008 by admin I Comments (1)

INDIANAPOLIS - Two of the most dominant WWE Superstars of this decade – Batista and John Cena – weaved very parallel career paths that ultimately intersected at SummerSlam, and the eagerly anticipated one-on-one confrontation ended with The Animal roaring in victory.

The blockbuster battle more than six years in the making was a match for the ages. When both men first debuted in 2002, perhaps only a few of sports-entertainment’s most erudite maestros could foresee the achievements that awaited Cena and Batista.

From their initial appearances on SmackDown to each man’s respective World Championship triumph at WrestleMania 21 (the first of several for both), The Animal and the Chain Gang Commander would permanently alter the WWE landscape.

Their first-ever singles bout at SummerSlam was no different, as the Biggest Blockbuster of the Summer bore one of the most memorable and iconic collisions for all time. But, like other much lauded SummerSlam showdowns including WWE Hall of Famer Bret “Hit Man” Hart vs. British Bulldog in 1992 and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin vs. Undertaker in ’98, only one man could emerge the victor.

Each Superstar familiar with having the distinct strength advantage, the very recent former co-holders of the World Tag Team Titles unleashed a torrent of power moves that would have easily finished many other contenders. They even ventured into the submission realm; Cena locking in the STFU and Batista clinching his mentor Ric Flair’s signature Figure-Four Leglock.
